Resume Advice: Top six strategies for landing a job in this difficult market

Top six strategies for landing a job in this difficult market
View Original Article- http://www.itbusiness.ca/it/client/en/home/DetailNewsPrint.asp?id=52370

"How's business? What's the job market like? What are you working on? Do you know of any opportunities that I might be qualified for? I'm looking for an opportunity; can you help me? How can I navigate this job market? What do I need to do to differentiate myself?"

Those are the most common questions executive recruiters say job seekers are asking them these days - But recruiters don't have time to answer!

So here's the answers:

To help recruiters and the IT professionals contacting them, CIO.com compiled recruiters' answers to job seekers' pressing job search questions into six tips for working effectively with recruiters and for increasing your chances of landing a new job in this terrible market.

--You have to make yourself visible-become a thought-leader.
Another way to make yourself visible: maintain a strong presence on the websites recruiters use to find and screen candidates, such as LinkedIn and ZoomInfo.

--Offer Something in Return.
You can distinguish yourself from the rest of the job seekers contacting recruiters for advice by offering something to them, says Sam Gordon.

--Recruiters like job seekers who try to help them.

--Be honest:
If you're not interested in a position that a recruiter calls you about, or you're in the middle of a 12-month long systems implementation and you can't make a move until it's complete, tell the recruiter up front, says Fairlie.

Similarly, adds Fairlie, if a search firm offers you an interview with a client that you know you absolutely don't want, tell the search firm it isn't what you want, explain why and tell them what you are looking for.

--You can increase your chances of finding a new job if you're open to relocating, switching industries or doing different work.

-- Hand over a business card first, to make the relationship start like a networking discussion, rather than handing over a Resume.  Have the contact info on the card, with some top "selling yourself" points on the back.  A good recruiter will followup if there's interest.

Good luck -
Chris Richmond

Job Search Tips - IT Job market in 2009 - Why predictions don't matter

Link...

Hi, As an IT Project Analyst who helps with staffing for Avanade, I can help you understand the job trends in Toronto now, help you connect with others here in TO, and give good IT career advice.
(See http://www.redcanary.ca/view/salary-survey  too ;)

In a nutshell there are 2 IT economies for hiring:
New grads to 5 yrs experience - dominated by $$ or hourly rate.
8+ yrs experience - hired based on your industry knowledge in a vertical niche.

The new grads are a commodity item - HR managers want the most experience for the lowest price per hour.  You'll very often be undercut by someone hungrier and more desperate than you.  So you have to sell your soft skills, leadership, and business knowledge to show the "whole package".  As tough as it is, try to always find work in one niche vertical area, so you can sell yourself as a "specialist" eg UI for the Finance industry.  Recruiters read hundreds of CV's that all look alike - from people trying to cast as wide a net as possible, so they all end up looking generic.

Once your resume has that theme - usually by the 5-8 year mark, then you're set for life - no matter what happens in the Financial markets or in the economy.

So let your "passion" guide you in what training you should take - You can't be an expert in everything.  If you like ASP.net, I can't give much solid advice, as every app is a web app these days...  But I can tell you that Sharepoint skills are definitely in demand.

What are your .NET specialist skills?  Contact me to find out about roles at Avanade Canada...

Hope that helps,
Cheers,
Chris Richmond,

Resume formatting help...

As an IT recruiter I want all the info possible on each of your projects... Problem Description, team size, budget, time line, your role, technologies used, the % time spent on tasks, and finally a statement showing how you contributed to that success (eg saved time / money, kept the client from switching, etc)

eg.
> Bank X, MWeb project, Developer
> * B2B development: Integration efforts focussed on transferring the
> customer purchase orders to the supplier;
Duration: 4 months
> * Validated requirements, designed use cases, sequence flows, and
> program architecture; Developed custom code based on the designed
> architecture (Java, External Libraries, Commerce One (BuySite & XPC),UML, XML, XSLT).
> * Provided Rollout support, testing, and documentation.
> * Involved with the full project lifecycle; Received Client Satisfaction Award.
> Timing: 30% gathering requirements, 30% coding, 30% creating and documenting automated test scripts, 10% end user support.

This is just a short summary, but it will give you a better idea of how to format your resume to make a hiring manager interested in calling you....

Contact me if you want a .net Architect job/ Microsoft BI architect job / Microsoft Network Engineer job with Avanade. Thanks,
